Every “best Monero wallet” list on the internet ranks the same five apps and tells you almost nothing about why. Monero is different enough from Bitcoin that the criteria are different too, and picking the wrong wallet quietly undoes the privacy the coin gives you. Here is what to look for, and where to compare the options.
Why the wallet does more work in Monero
A Bitcoin wallet mostly holds keys. A Monero wallet has to scan every block with your private view key to find payments meant for you, build ring signatures with 16 decoys on each spend, generate one-time stealth addresses for everyone who pays you, and hand out fresh subaddresses so nobody can link two payments. If any of that is done badly, the chain still hides your transactions from the world, but the wallet may leak them to whoever runs the server it talks to.
The six criteria
1. Open source. Non-negotiable. Monero’s privacy depends on code that anyone can audit, and a closed-source wallet asks you to trust a company with your view key. Every serious Monero wallet publishes its code.
2. Node choice. The single most important privacy setting. A wallet that only connects to its maker’s server lets that server see your IP address and which transactions you ask about. Look for a wallet that lets you pick any node, including your own, and ideally one that supports connecting over Tor.
3. Subaddresses by default. Receiving to one fixed address links every payment together in the payer’s eyes. A good wallet hands out a new subaddress for each invoice automatically.
4. Fee control. Monero fees are cents, but a wallet should still let you choose priority for busy periods and show the fee before you send.
5. Built-in swaps, if you want them. Some wallets integrate no-KYC exchange services so you can move between Bitcoin and Monero without leaving the app. Convenient, but check which provider is behind it.
6. Seed and recovery. A 25-word Monero seed (or the newer 16-word polyseed format) restores everything. Make sure you can export it, and that restoring shows a correct restore height so scanning does not take a day.
The main contenders in 2026
The community’s wallet directory currently lists 36 options with trust labels, tags and user reviews, and the shape of the field is clear. The official Monero GUI and CLI are the reference implementations, best for desktop users who run their own node, and the GUI carries a dozen community reviews. Cake Wallet, the first open-source Monero wallet on iOS back in 2018, is the mobile favourite for its custom-node support and built-in KYC-free swaps, and holds a 4.5-star average on the directory. Feather is the lightweight desktop choice with Tor integration built in. Each is tagged open-source; several are tagged no-KYC and account-not-required.
The directory also flags the other kind of listing. A new desktop wallet advertising “advanced transaction tools” currently sits at Questionable while its claims are checked, which is exactly the signal a newcomer needs before typing a seed phrase into it.
Three habits that matter more than the brand
- Run or choose your node deliberately. A public node from the directory’s node list is fine; your own node is better.
- Never reuse an address. Let the wallet generate subaddresses and hand out a new one each time.
- Keep the seed offline. Twenty-five words on paper in two places beat any cloud backup.

The best Monero wallet is an open-source one that lets you choose your node, hands out subaddresses automatically and restores cleanly from a seed. Several apps meet that bar, and a directory with reviews and trust labels is the fastest way to see which ones the community actually uses, and which ones it is still watching.
